About us…

We are an independent, Canadian owned and operated, photographic specialty retail store, located in the heart of downtown Toronto, at 89 Queen Street East.  We have been in operations for more than 5 decades and while we sell the latest digital photography gear, we also understand the joys, along with the preciousness of analog photography.  We have been proudly processing film in-house for many years and plan on doing so for many more!

Frequently Asked Questions

Terminology

If you can’t find the answer to your question below, please contact us.

COLOUR (C41) is the type of chemistry we use to process colour film. It should say on your canister or box, that this is the chemistry to use for the film.

BW stands for Black-and-White film. We use standardized industry chemistries to process black-and-white film.

135 is a format (size) of film. It is also known as 35mm or consumer film. This format of film is used in almost all disposable cameras. Please see our chart to see how it looks like in comparison to other formats.

120 is a format (size) of film. It is also known as medium format and is approximately 60mm in comparison to 35mm. Please see our chart to see how it looks like in comparison to other formats.

Yes, we can Push and Pull C41, B&W and E6.  This is a technique of using different ISO speed than what the film is rated for during shooting and developing. Only when you have changed your camera’s ISO settings to be different from the ISO speed noted on the film, is this an option to consider. To learn more about push/pull technique please click here.

If you have a disposable camera, you do not have this option.  If your camera has auto settings then this is normally not an option.

.

We deliver scans via email. Please ensure you download your copy as our link expires in 30 days. Please note, if you provide us with a USB or request a CD instead of emailing or in addition to emailing, there is a nominal charge of $1.00 to make additional copies. We recommend the following;

Jpeg scans – if you plan to only share online and/or do nominal editing and/or print smaller than 8”x10”. These files will be compressed.

Tiff scan – if you require more detail in the files because you will need to edit and/or print larger than 8”x10” but smaller than 16”x20” and/or wish to have uncompressed files

X-High-res-Tiff Scans – if you require very detailed files because you will need to heavily edit and/or print larger than 16”x20” and/or wish to have a larger uncompressed file.

For more details regarding scan dimensions by format, please click to see our chart

The most common size we print is 4x6 (or if 120 format 4x4) inches.  This size is found in most photo albums.  The next most common size is 5x7 (or if 120 format 5x5) inches.  As the print is larger in size, the price to print is more expensive. Please see our chart to see how it looks like in comparison to other formats.

This is the number of frames/pictures in the roll.  For 135 format/35mm, it will say on the canister how many standard exposures (=frames/pictures) you can get from the roll.  For 120 format/medium format film, it will depend on your aspect ratios/camera settings.

We use Noritsu archival photo-paper.

Matte –our matte paper is not a flat matte.  There is a slight luster.   If you are putting your prints in an album or framed, we recommend this paper finish.

Glossy –our glossy paper is not a high gloss and can tolerate handling/fingerprints than high gloss papers of the past.  People find colours are more vibrant.

We can frame your picture with a thin white border if this option is chosen.  If not, we will print full bleed (edge to edge) of the paper size chosen.  Click here to see samples.

Do not cut – we will put your processed film into a protective sleeve and wrap it around a core. People choose this option when they wish to scan the film themselves or if they have their own storage system. This option is automatically chosen for 120 format/medium format film because we do not have a machine to cut.

Cut – this option is only available for 135format/35mm film. Our machine cuts it into strips of 4 frames. If you wish to have your 35mm negatives cut into strips of 5+ frames because of the way you store them, please select the Do Not Cut option and you can cut them yourself. Click here to see images of the cut negatives.

Destroy – we will shred and discard your processed film a few days after you receive your scans. Please review your digital files and contact us immediately if you have any concerns.

PRIORITY, on the day we receive the film, we will aim to process prior to closing of the LAB day (around 5pm).

RUSH, on the day we receive the film, we will aim to process upon the next LAB day OR the next available LAB day (around 5pm).

No-Rush, on the day we receive the film, we will aim to process within 7 LAB days or earlier.

If you choose Priority but we are at our capacity, it will be completed at the earliest next available day and we will provide a partial refund (difference between Priority and Rush charges). If our Rush service is moved forward for more than 3 days, we may provide a partial refund and complete the order as No-Rush.

Regardless, please look out for our store receipt to indicate we have received your film and the service times we will aim for.

While we will endeavor to complete orders on time, none of our times can be guaranteed as there may be situations beyond our control.

Our photo-lab business days for processing are Monday to Friday, closed on weekends and stat holidays.

Please indicate how many rolls you will be dropping off with us for this service.

If you are sending in more than 1 roll with different services, for example 1 roll is develop-only and the other roll is to develop and scan, when it is received by us, we need to know which is which.  Use the brand and ISO OR if your rolls have the same brand and ISO, then use non-repeating numbers when completing the online form and mark your film rolls to match accordingly please.

We do not have the intended chemistry to process E6/Slide film and use our out lab partners; Borealis (in Montreal) or E6it (Local). They help us develop the film in E6 chemicals and when it returns to the store, we scan and/or print. We default our services to Borealis.

Yes, we do! Please treat as 135format/35mm film and we will also remove the film from the camera.

We do not have the chemistry to process this type of film.  However we have partnered with trusted specialized photo-lab companies to process this type of film. They are Borealis (in Montreal) or E6it (Local).

Borealis processes film with a dip and dunk machine, with chemistry that will be replenished automatically, and has consistent service times of 2 weeks before it returns to us to do post-processing (like scans and/or prints).

E6it processes film with a Jobo Autolab, with new chemistry every run and service times can vary from 2 to 6+weeks Our services default to Borealis.

Should you wish for E6it, there will be opportunity comment for this request when submitting your film for processing.

Please click the E6 tab at the top of the page to begin your order.

Yes we can.  We have the ability to process 110, 126, 127, 220.  However these types of format require a specialized quote.   Please fill out the Contact Us form if you plan on sending in 110, 126, 127, 220. We will respond back to you with quotes accordingly and try to answer all your questions before you mail- in or drop-off.

We also can process APS film, please click the tab at the top of the page to begin your order.

Only available for E6 film and for 135/35mm format, where we will cut the process film and put it into plastic slide mounts which can then be put into a film projector.  Click here to see images of what it looks like

Yes, we can and we only recommend it for colour-slide-film (E6 film) to be processed in C41 chemistry.  It should be noted colours will not be accurate or realistic.

Yes, if we have the chemistry we will always develop it because this is the only way to know if there are images in the film.  However, the quality of the image may have deteriorated due to age and storage conditions.  For colour film, you may see colour shifts and faded images.  For black-and-white, images may be severely faded.  Please note that we will need to charge a minor chemistry fee even if it results in no images.

If we do not have the chemistry, we may be able to send it to Film Rescue in Saskatchewan. We would contact you with further details should this be the case.

No, sorry we can’t.  We do not have the chemistry to do so.  However we can send to Film Rescue in Saskatchewan for you or you can send to them directly.

Film Rescue is famous for being able to process this film still and we honour what they do greatly! If you would like more details from us, please use the Contact Us page to let us know.

We will contact you to organize its return and provide a refund accordingly.

No, we will not.  When film has become wet with liquid, pieces of the film emulsion can slip off the film during processing unbeknown to us.  This can attach to another person’s film causing un-repairable processing damage to their roll and also clog our filters.  When our filters are clogged, we will need to discard chemistry, and to re-start our machines.  It is time consuming, wasteful and expensive.  If you have purchased this type of film please consider processing it yourself.  If you suspect your film has been in contact with liquid, please let us know (or any processing lab you bring it to process) so it can be determined if it is possible or not to process.  Failure to do so can have damaging repercussions other customer’s film and to the photo-lab along with the staff it supports.

We will need to charge a chemistry fee and if you ordered other services we will provide a refund on those services.

There can be many reasons why a roll is blank.  From our experience, the main causes are not loading the film properly, severely under or over exposure of the film or camera malfunction.  We have made YouTube videos on how to load film into common film cameras.  Review your camera setting sin comparison to the lighting situation.  Consider an external light meter.  Also, consider bringing in your camera to us (or your local camera shop) for a checkup to ensure the shutter and film advance systems are in working.

As film has such a long history, the terms “develop” and “process” have been interchanged and has become synonymous.  For us, “develop” is treating the film through various stages of chemistry and rendering it insensitive to light.  “Process” is the action of developing film in the according steps.  For example; Process C41 means we will develop your film with a developer, bleach, stop and fix chemistry and there is a certain process (order and timing) in which we will do so.

Maybe. We are able to process ECN-2 in small batches and by hand at our lab. Some Seattle Film Works film used this type of film and as such, we will be able to process it. Please use the Contact Us page to advise what the canister says and we can tell you accordingly.

Yes, we can. Please click here to start your order.

Once we finish processing your order we will send you an email with the link to your images.  To be efficient, we work in batches, so if you give us different film formats and request for different services, you will get more than one link as we process through your order. For example, if you sent us one colour and one black-and-white film, you will get 2 links as we have separate machines for each operating at different capacities/times. Also, 35mm and 120 film will be separated.

The best way to determine how many links you will get for your order is to review our store receipt that will confirm your order and indicate the order number(s) our photo-lab has assigned to it.

Yes, we will to a certain extent as per our standard judgment, as our scanners can interpret film differently from what we are used to seeing digitally.  Please let us know if you have a preference or “mood” OR advise us you do not wish to have any adjustments.

If you select 4" prints you will receive 4"x 4" square prints rather than the 4"x6" standard size. This also applies to 5" prints.

We use Noritsu archival photo-paper.

Matte –our matte paper is not a flat matte.  There is a slight luster.   If you are putting your prints in an album or framed, we recommend this paper finish.

SHIPPING

Yes, we will if you do not choose to destroy processed film.  Your film negatives/positives are the original source of the image.  When we scan them to make a digital file and/or to print from them, the scanned copy is only as good as the scanner at the time of scan and what is needed for the size of the print.  As scanners improve, they can be re-scanned at higher resolution to result in more information and consequently you can make larger prints if you like.  Once the film/ negatives/positives is destroyed, your scanned copy is a copy limited by its pixels and format at the time of the scan.

You can mail it to us OR you can drop it off during our operating hours OR you can use our mailbox that's available 24/7.

Please indicate how many rolls you will be dropping off with us for this service.

If you are sending in more than 1 roll with different services, for example 1 roll is develop-only and the other roll is to develop and scan, when it is received by us, we need to know which is which.  Use the brand and ISO OR if your rolls have the same brand and ISO, then use non-repeating numbers when
completing the online form and mark your film rolls to match accordingly please.

This portal will automatically send you an order confirmation however when we receive the rolls(s) of film, we will send you a store receipt to confirm it's been received along with advice to service times. Please review this receipt and if there are any discrepancies please contact us by phone (416-363-1749). Thank you.

Our system will automatically charge $15 for tracked shipping. You will receive an email with the tracking number once your order is about to be shipped. We ship to Canadian address ONLY. We ship with Canada Post usually.

If you would like letter size shipping and if your order qualifies, we will refund the difference. Please note that there will be no tracking of it.

Because of size requirements and from our experience, we are only able to ship small orders under letter size shipping fees ($5).

For example; 1 roll of cut 35mm film with scans and 1 set of prints

**Develop only orders and print only orders are always shipped back with expedited shipping. We cannot afford to take the chance of losing these items in the mail via letter size shipping when you do not have a backup copy (ie. digital scans sent to your email)
